Oxygen is essential during every stage of wound healing.
Healing tissues need oxygen to support cellular energy production, collagen formation, immune activity, tissue remodeling, and the development of new blood vessels. However, swelling, inflammation, tissue trauma, and temporary changes in circulation may reduce the amount of oxygen reaching the surgical area.
HBOT increases oxygen dissolved in the plasma, allowing oxygen to diffuse more extensively into tissues—including areas where circulation may be temporarily compromised.
Scientific reviews describe several biological mechanisms through which HBOT may support surgical wound healing:
A recent review, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Modern Surgical Practice, discusses the growing role of HBOT as an adjunct in surgical care and describes its effects on tissue oxygenation, fibroblast function, angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, inflammation, and wound repair.
Your recovery begins before you enter the operating room.
Preoperative HBOT—sometimes called hyperbaric preconditioning—is intended to increase tissue oxygen availability and stimulate adaptive biological responses before surgical stress occurs.
Depending on the procedure, health history, and surgeon’s recommendations, pre-surgical HBOT may be considered to:
The review Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: An Overview discusses HBOT’s potential role in wound healing, tissue regeneration, blood-vessel formation, inflammation, and surgical recovery. It also reviews clinical research involving hyperbaric preconditioning before surgery.
Preoperative HBOT is not appropriate for every patient or every procedure. The timing and number of sessions should be individualized and coordinated with the operating surgeon.
After surgery, injured tissues have a greater demand for oxygen. At the same time, swelling and temporary disruption of small blood vessels may limit local oxygen delivery.
Postoperative HBOT may help create a more oxygen-rich environment during this critical healing period.
Depending on the patient and procedure, postoperative HBOT may be used as an adjunct to support:
A 2024 peer-reviewed chapter, Enhancing Postoperative Healing with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Applications in Plastic Surgery Procedures, reviews the scientific mechanisms, clinical applications, possible benefits, risks, and limitations of HBOT in cosmetic and reconstructive surgical recovery.
A more recent review, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Surgical Wound Healing and Postoperative Recovery, examines HBOT in surgical wound management and discusses its potential role in tissue repair, surgical complications, and postoperative recovery.
Plastic and cosmetic procedures often involve significant tissue manipulation, swelling, bruising, and temporary disruption of small blood vessels.
Patients may explore HBOT as part of recovery after procedures such as:
Published research has evaluated HBOT in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, including its use in facelift recovery and compromised soft tissue. While the findings are encouraging, research remains limited, and protocols have not yet been standardized for every cosmetic procedure.
HBOT should therefore be viewed as a supportive therapy—not a guarantee of faster healing or prevention of complications.
Bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and connective tissues all require adequate oxygen during healing.
A physician-guided HBOT recovery plan may be considered following orthopedic procedures such as:
HBOT may help support oxygen delivery to recovering tissues and complement the surgeon’s rehabilitation plan. It does not replace physical therapy, medication, wound care, activity restrictions, or orthopedic follow-up.
Patients may also explore perioperative HBOT in connection with selected general or reconstructive procedures, including:
Every surgical situation is different. Patients with a suspected wound complication, infection, compromised flap, severe pain, drainage, fever, discoloration, or wound separation must contact their surgeon immediately. HBOT should never delay urgent surgical assessment.
At NY360 Wellness Medicine, HBOT is not treated as a one-size-fits-all add-on.
Our goal is to develop a recovery strategy based on:
All therapies are integrated into personalized protocols—not used as replacements for conventional surgical care.
Before beginning treatment, patients undergo a safety screening to determine whether HBOT is appropriate.
During a session, you rest inside a hyperbaric chamber while the internal pressure gradually increases. You may feel pressure in your ears similar to what you experience during airplane travel. Our team explains techniques for equalizing ear pressure and monitors you throughout the process.
Depending on the prescribed plan, HBOT sessions are scheduled around the surgical date and recovery timeline. There is no single pre- or postoperative protocol that is appropriate for every surgery or every patient.
Your individualized schedule will depend on:
An HBOT consultation may be helpful if you:
A consultation does not guarantee that HBOT will be recommended. Safety and medical appropriateness come first.
HBOT is generally well tolerated when delivered with proper screening, supervision, and safety procedures. However, it is not risk-free.
Possible side effects and risks include:
Certain conditions may make HBOT inappropriate or require additional clearance. An untreated pneumothorax is a major contraindication. Some lung conditions, ear problems, infections, medications, implanted devices, and other medical issues require careful review.
Patients must disclose all medications, supplements, medical conditions, implanted devices, and recent procedures before treatment.
HBOT may support some of the biological processes involved in recovery, including tissue oxygenation, collagen formation, angiogenesis, and inflammatory regulation. Some clinical studies report improved postoperative outcomes, but results vary by procedure and patient. HBOT cannot guarantee faster healing.
There is no universal protocol. The number and timing of preoperative sessions depend on the procedure, medical history, healing risks, available evidence, and recommendations from the treating physicians. We usually recommend atleast 1-2 sessions before your procedure.
Timing should be coordinated with your surgeon and the NY360 medical team. In some recovery plans, treatment begins soon after surgery. In other situations, it may be introduced later because of a specific wound-healing concern.
The sooner the better.
We have seen that usually a package of 7 sessions (2 before and 5 after works great for uncomplicated surgery).
If there is any wound infection or complication, then you may need more sessions.
HBOT has been studied as a supportive therapy following cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Research discusses possible benefits involving swelling, bruising, tissue oxygenation, wound healing, and compromised grafts or flaps. Evidence is still developing, and it is not considered routine or necessary after every plastic surgery procedure.
No treatment can guarantee the prevention of infection, tissue loss, scarring, blood clots, wound separation, or other surgical complications. HBOT may support healing in selected patients, but it does not replace appropriate surgery, wound care, antibiotics, emergency treatment, or postoperative monitoring.
HBOT is an established adjunctive treatment for certain compromised grafts and flaps, but it is not required for healthy, normally healing tissue. A suspected compromised flap or graft is time-sensitive and must first be evaluated by the operating surgeon or an appropriate emergency specialist.
No. HBOT may complement an orthopedic recovery plan, but it does not replace physical therapy, rehabilitation, medications, movement restrictions, or follow-up with the orthopedic surgeon.
Insurance coverage is generally limited to specific medically recognized conditions. Preventive or enhanced-recovery HBOT associated with routine elective or cosmetic surgery may not be covered. Patients should verify benefits directly with their insurer.
Patients should inform their surgeon before adding HBOT to a perioperative plan. NY360 may request surgical clearance or additional medical information when appropriate.
Routine pre- and postoperative HBOT for uncomplicated elective surgery is generally considered an adjunctive or off-label application rather than a universally FDA-cleared indication. Certain conditions involving compromised grafts, flaps, radiation injury, severe infection, or selected nonhealing wounds may fall within recognized medical uses. Eligibility must be evaluated individually.
Contact your surgeon or seek emergency medical care immediately if you experience:
HBOT appointments should never delay emergency care or evaluation by the operating surgeon.
Your surgery may last a few hours—but healing continues for weeks or months.
At NY360 Wellness Medicine, we look beyond the procedure itself and help patients prepare for the biological demands of recovery. Our physician-guided approach integrates HBOT into a personalized plan when it is medically appropriate.
True healing begins at the root.

Planning plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, or another general surgical procedure?
NY360 Wellness Medicine offers physician-guided pre- and postoperative Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to support the body’s natural healing environment before and after surgery.
Surgery places significant demands on the body. Tissue disruption, inflammation, swelling, reduced local circulation, and increased oxygen requirements are all part of the recovery process. HBOT exposes the body to oxygen in a pressurized chamber, increasing the amount of oxygen carried in the bloodstream and delivered to tissues.
When medically appropriate and coordinated with your surgical team, HBOT may be incorporated into a personalized enhanced-recovery plan before and after surgery.
